A Montessori Education Freedom of Choice Montessori observed that children choose some materials in preference to others. She later discovered that children had critical periods for mental development (language, maths, etc). At these times the children choose activities which satisfied these particular developmental needs. For children under the age of seven, the materials that were chosen were hands-on, concrete materials and involved language. The older children were more interested in abstract information and processes (the “how” and “why” of things). It is for these reasons that we provide: - A prepared environment with a variety of accessible activities which suit each developmental level.
- An uninterrupted work period so that spontaneous interests and concentration can be developed.
- Respect for individual needs and the rights of the child (to their interests, capabilities and limitations).
